Single-use plastics
The South Australian Government has banned single-use plastics. The Single-use and Other Plastics Products (Waste Avoidance) Act 2020 has previously restricted and prohibited the following items:
- single-use plastic straws, cutlery, bowls, plates and beverage stirrers;
- expanded polystyrene cups, bowls, plates, clamshell containers:
- oxo-degradable plastic products;
- plastic pizza savers; and
- plastic-stemmed cotton buds.
The prohibition list is being expanded from September 1 2024 to include the following items:
- plastic shopping bag;
- plastic barrier bag;
- single-use plastic beverage cup;
- single-use plastic beverage cup lid;
- single-use plastic beverage plug;
- expanded polystyrene food tray;
- expanded polystyrene food or beverage container;
- prescribed food container;
- prescribed food container lid;
- plastic confetti;
- plastic balloon stick;
- plastic balloon tie;
- single-use plastic food bag tag.
