Sultram Place (Adelaide)
The EPA is starting an environmental assessment in a small section of Adelaide near Sultram Place in June 2025.
The EPA was recently notified of site contamination in this area. Trichloroethene (TCE) has been detected in soil vapour. TCE is a colourless liquid chemical generally associated with past industrial and manufacturing activities. In some cases TCE can come up through the soil as a vapour and enter buildings through crawlspaces, floorboards, cracks and gaps in foundations. The movement of vapour into a building is called “vapour intrusion”.
The EPA’s assessment will try to find where the TCE in soil vapour extends to and if it presents a vapour intrusion risk to nearby buildings. Buildings with a basement or cellar may be more at risk. Please let us know if you have a basement or cellar.
The EPA will install soil vapour bores in public spaces, including roadside verges, to test levels of TCE in soil vapour across the area. The results will determine whether further investigation is needed.
An environmental assessment report will be prepared and published on this page.
