EPA assessment area
This work will involve drilling groundwater bores in road verges and footpaths (not on private properties) to allow the sampling of groundwater to test for chemicals and vapour coming up through the soil. This work is expected to commence in September and the EPA will write again to the community once it receives the consultant’s report.
The groundwater contamination is believed to be associated with past industrial practices that used a chemical trichloroethene (TCE). This is likely to have occurred as a result of historical chemical disposal and handling that was considered appropriate many decades ago but is no longer acceptable by today’s standards.
This work is to determine whether chemicals used in historical industrial practices have impacted the groundwater (bore water), presenting a risk to human health – either from using bore water or from vapour coming up through the soil.
