EPA assessment area
The EPA commenced a program of environmental assessment work in Albert Park in March 2019. This work is to determine whether chemicals used in historical industrial practices might be a risk to human health, coming from vapour in the soil.
A site at 24 Murray Street Albert Park was formerly used to manufacture tin cans between 1940 and 1984. A number of other larger manufacturing companies have continued operations in the industrial complex since World War II.
The first stage of work was to determine whether chemicals such as trichloroethene (TCE) are present in groundwater vapour, and whether this could be entering residential indoor air.
The results confirmed the presence of TCE, and a computer model has been used to predict the areas that need further testing. The EPA will drill more bores in road verges in its next stage of work, which will determine whether any work on private properties is needed. The assessment area is also being extended to the northwest and west, in order to find the boundary of the contaminated vapour plume.

Groundwater in this area is contaminated, and on 12 September 2019 the EPA established a groundwater prohibition area in Hendon and surrounding areas including Albert Park.
