Suppliers & installers
Suppliers and installers of radiation equipment must hold a licence from the EPA.
This licence sets out specific requirements as outlined in the legislation for professionals when supplying and installing this equipment. These are based around the National Directory for Radiation Protection, which includes the requirements of the relevant codes and standards.
- Licence application to operate an ionising radiation apparatus
- Licence application to use or handle a radioactive substance
- Notification by owner of sale/disposal of an x-ray apparatus
- Notification of sale, installation or relocation of an X-ray unit
- Personal radiation monitoring devices
Licence-holders are responsible for making sure their contact and employment details are kept up to date. Renewal notices are sent out to licence-holders prior to the expiry date.
A person operating a business that sells or installs ionising radiation apparatus is required to provide the new owner and the EPA with certain information whenever an apparatus is sold or installed. Note that installation includes the delivery of portable and mobile apparatus.
When an apparatus is sold
If a supplier receives an order for an apparatus and intends to accept the order, they must provide the new owner with the following documents:
- Application to register an ionising radiation apparatus
- Application for a licence to operate an ionising radiation apparatus.
In addition the supplier must also provide the EPA the following information (by letter, fax, email or the Notification of sale, installation or relocation of an X-ray unit form):
- name of the person selling the apparatus
- name of the person to whom the apparatus has been sold
- a statement setting out the make, model, class or kind of apparatus that has been sold, and the address to which it has been delivered.
When an apparatus is to be installed or delivered
If a supplier intends to install a fixed apparatus or deliver a portable or mobile apparatus they must provide the EPA with certain information. This must take place at least 7 days before commencing the installation of a fixed apparatus or within 7 days of the delivery of a portable or mobile apparatus. The supplier must provide the EPA the following information (by letter, fax, email or the Notification of sale, installation or relocation of an X-ray unit form):
- name of the person selling the apparatus
- name of the person to whom the apparatus has been sold
- a statement setting out the make, model, class or kind of apparatus that has been sold, and the address to which it has been delivered.
Replacing a major component
A seller or installer that sells or replaces one of the following component of an apparatus:
- the X-ray tube housing or a high voltage generator in dental, medical (including chiropractic proposes) or veterinary apparatus
or - the high voltage generator, tube housing or sample changer in an X-ray analysis apparatus
must provide the following information to the EPA within 7 days of the sale/replacement (by letter, fax or email):
- identity of the owner of the apparatus
- address at which the apparatus is located
- details of the make and model of the components sold or replaced.
