Commercial tanning units used for cosmetic purposes are banned from 1 January 2015.
After 31 December 2014, the Radiation Protection and Control (Non-Ionising Radiation) Regulations 2013 makes it an offence to provide a commercial cosmetic tanning service. A person must not, for fee or reward, or in the course of carrying on a business, provide or offer to provide, a cosmetic tanning service to another person. Penalties of up to $10,000 apply.
Tanning units used in private homes will not be regulated, as long as they are for personal use or for the use of others (eg friends) and there is no commercial interest (fee or reward).
Owners of commercial tanning units licensed under the EPA have been reminded of their obligations under the new Regulations. From 1 January 2015, the EPA will inspect these premises to ensure that the tanning units have been removed or are not in use for commercial purposes.
