Effective use of NPI data
Uses of NPI data
NPI data is used in many ways by government, industry and the community. Here are a few examples:
South Australian Government
- EPA load-based licensing uses NPI data to calculate the Resource Efficiency Fee (REF).
- State of the Environment reports use NPI data to show the pressure pollution exerts on our water and air quality.
- Marine parks design & monitoring by the Marine Parks Unit in the Department for Environment and Water. NPI data is used in conjunction with other social and economic data such as aquaculture, recreational fishing, boat ramps, jetties, mining and shack settlements to assist in the designing of the marine park zoning network. NPI data also support the marine parks monitoring and evaluation program.
- National Maps includes NPI data as one of the many data sources that can be displayed.
NPI Interpretive Guide
The Interpretive Guide was produced to help industries gain a better understanding of the aim and use of the NPI.
To interpret NPI data, assessors need to understand the program and its limitations, as well as the common causes of data variation, which methods of analysis to avoid and suggested techniques to employ.
It is also necessary to consider the factors that contribute to the emissions, rather than focusing only on total emissions.
