Position statements and guidelines
The EPA focuses on air quality, noise, radiation, site contamination, waste, and water quality issues when undertaking assessments through the planning system. The EPA has prepared a series of overarching position statements that describe the EPA’s position on these environmental issues for each stage of the EPA’s involvement in the South Australian planning system.
The EPA has also prepared a series of position statements and guidelines on particular issues.
Overarching position statements
Framework for managing site contamination through the South Australian planning system
The site contamination framework describes the government’s framework to ensure that, as far as is practically possible, land is not developed for a more sensitive use unless/until site contamination risks have been considered and appropriate cost-effective measures put in place to protect and sustainably manage our environment to ensure safe and healthy communities.

This information sheet provides planning authorities, developers and landfill owners and operators with clarification of EPA advice relating to the risks presented by landfill gas, and the basis on which the EPA will respond to development applications.
Guidelines
- Music noise from indoor venues
This guideline will assist in the preparation by proponents, and assessment by planning authorities, of applications for development of indoor entertainment venues and other premises at which music may be played, and for new noise sensitive development proposed near an existing music venue. - Wastewater treatment plants and the South Australian planning system
This guideline will assist in the protection of the environment and community health for all South Australians by providing a clear statement that will assist planning authorities and proponents of development understand the position of the EPA on wastewater treatment plants and the South Australian planning system. - Construction environmental management plan (CEMP)
