National Pollutant Inventory (NPI) data online

The latest National Pollutant Inventory (NPI) data for 2022-2023 is now available online, with 493 South Australian facilities providing reports for the 2022–23 reporting year.
Altogether, 4691 facilities from across Australia submitted NPI data for the 2022-23 year.
The NPI is an online database published by the Australian Government (Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water) containing information on the types and quantities of pollutants being emitted from a range of industrial, commercial, transport and household activities.
In South Australia NPI data comes from a combination of EPA licensed and non-licensed facilities. A business may also need to report to the NPI even if it is not licensed by EPA. For those EPA licensed facilities that are NPI reporters, your NPI data can be used for the resource efficiency fee component of your annual licence fee.
While the NPI is a federal initiative, each state or territory is responsible for implementing the program within their jurisdiction. The SA EPA has a NPI team who run the SA program.
The focus of the team is to ensure the quality and reliability of the reported data through training and support, desktop auditing, scheduled site visits, and onsite audits of facilities.
The NPI program aims to:
- help in environmental planning and management
- promote waste minimisation and cleaner production by industry and business, leading to energy and resource savings
- provide the community with accessible information on pollutant emissions to the environment
- increase community awareness of the contribution to pollution from many different sources.
