Research involving humans
Regulation 43 of the Radiation Protection and Control (Ionising Radiation) Regulations 2015 researchers can carry out in vivo research involving the use of ionising radiation on a human being provided that:
- The research is conducted in accordance with the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) Code of Practice: Exposure of Humans to Ionising Radiation for Research Purposes (2005), and
- The EPA is notified in writing of the research before the research commences using the EPA Notification of a Research Study Involving Exposure of Humans to Ionising Radiation form.
The nationally agreed Code of Practice: Exposure of Humans to Ionising Radiation for Research Purposes sets out the requirements which must be met by researchers, medical physicists and Human Research Ethics Committees to, for example, ensure researchers keep radiation doses to research participants to the minimum level practicable, and research participants are provided with sufficient information to allow them to give informed consent.
Process for research notification
Step 1: For each study, download the Notification of a Research Study Involving Exposure of Humans to Ionising Radiation form and complete all parts of the form.
Step 2: Email the completed form or you may post it to:
