Landfill
Disposal of material to landfill is the last resort option for waste. The Environment Protection (Waste to Resources) Policy 2010 (W2R EPP) supports the South Australia’s Strategic Plan 2007 target of reducing waste to landfill.
The EPP has banned the following types of waste from being disposed of to landfill:
- cardboard and paper (aggregated)
- computer monitors
- electrical and electronic equipment
- fluorescent lighting
- glass packaging (aggregated)
- hazardous waste
- lead acid batteries
- liquid waste
- medical waste
- metals (aggregated)
- oil
- PET or HDPE plastic packaging (aggregated)
- PP or LDPE plastic packaging
- PVC or PS plastic packaging
- televisions
- tyres (whole)
- vegetative matter collected by councils
- vehicles
- whitegoods
Green Industries SA has formulated strategies that develop markets and infrastructure for certain wastes that are to be banned form landfill. Refer to Green Industries for information on where these materials can be taken for recycling.
Householders can bring some types of hazardous waste to the Household Hazardous Waste Depot. Wastes from businesses and government agencies will not be accepted. Such wastes may be disposed of by commercial waste treatment companies.
